We love our sex toys at Badd Kitty! Hopefully you do too. Alone or with others, they are a great addition to a healthy sex life. Sex toy safety is just as important to sexual wellness as any other sexual act. Proper use, handling, and cleaning of toys will ensure your pleasure and sexual health.

Proper sanitation of sex toys starts with the material each toy is made of. A simple rule of thumb is, the less porous the material, the easier it is to clean. Sturdy materials like plastic, silicone, glass, or metal can be safely scrubbed down with mild soap and water or a high quality toy cleaner( recommended). If they are battery-free, you can even toss them in the dishwasher or boil in water for 10 minutes to thoroughly sanitize! These items can also, generally be bleached, although not recommended. In every case, you must consider that these materials may be inserted into the body, so you do not want any harsh chemical residue.

With slightly more porous materials like rubber, TPE, Cyberskin, or vinyl you can still very gently scrub them down, but use warm, not hot water, less toy cleaner, and be sure to rinse well. It should be noted that it is recommended to use condoms when using Cyberskin toys, especially when used anally, as frequent washing can degrade the material. You should also powder down Cyberskin with a toy preservation powder once it’s dry to keep it from getting tacky. It is also important to know the materials each toy is made of . For example, if the toy is not pure silicone , but uses filler materials, then the toy can also degrade with use of certain lubricants . This is due to a chemical reaction with the lesser quality filler materials and the lube or cleaner. It is always best to have higher quality , pure material toys and pure lubricants to avoid any material degradation .

There are a variety of sex toy cleaners available as well. Check out Badd Kitty for a product that will work for your favorite toys! Keeping an easy to use cleaner with your stash will help create a habit of keeping your items clean, fresh, and ready for you. Even when using a high quality spray toy cleaner , wipe the toy down with warm cloth to remove any residue prior to applying the cleaning solution. Once your toys are clean, keep them stored in a bag or box to prevent dirt and dust from accumulating. We also recommend an anti-bacterial storage bag for each toy’s safe storage.

When sharing sex toys, especially penetrative toys, use condoms and clean well between uses. It is also a good practice to have seperate anal and vaginal toys, even for items for your own personal use, to help prevent cross contamination of harmful bacteria. Very porous materials, like leather or rubber, should be considered one-user items. These materials can trap bacteria and pathogens, even after cleaning. Even items like paddles or floggers should get some sanitary attention between uses. Leather items can be wiped down with saddle soap and a warm, wet cloth.

A key element worth stressing is always use plenty of lubricant, with penetrative or “friction” toys such as dildos, vibrators, anal toys, or clitoral stimulators to name a few. Not using enough lubrication can cause micro tears in the skin of the vagina, labia, or anus and allow the introduction of bacteria. This can cause irritation or even infection, even with the cleanest of toys. Quality lubricants are available in many forms and are tailored to intended uses, preferences, formulas and viscosities. Please ask your sexual health advisor to assist you in choosing the best lubricant. It’s a very important piece to staying sexually healthy !

Keeping your sex toys clean will add to your dirty fun!
