Stand Proud

Stand Proud

Tori Douglas on Aug 5th 2020

As we wrap up this year’s Pride month, we should note that it has been, needless to say, unusual. This year the parties, parades, and other assorted celebrations that we traditionally see to mark June as Pride month have been made impossible due to Covid-19. This year we have to celebrate Pride in more personal ways, but celebration is still possible. In this time of social distancing, we need to get creative to show solidarity and support for Pride month and the community it celebrates. Here are a few suggestions of how to show your support, not only for the month of Pride for the LGBTQI+ community and their allies, but also how to keep the Pride going throughout the year going forward.

Support a worthy cause.

Times are tough, and many of us are feeling the pinch in our wallets. Charities are feeling this pinch as well. If you have the resources to donate, please seek out charities and foundations who are helping causes you are passionate about. Be sure to do your research on these organizations, as you want to have the most impact for your generous donation. If you can not financially contribute to the organization of your choice, there are still ways to donate your time while socially distancing.  From sewing and donating masks, to letter writing, to staffing a crisis line from home, there are volunteer opportunities to be found, if you seek them out.

Virtual get togethers

If you want to experience the more social side of Pride, the internet is there for you! Host a virtual get together on Zoom, GoToMeeting, or Skype for your friends. Visit a virtual drag show on YouTube or Twitch. Some of these shows are even having fundraisers for LGBTQI+ causes. Even a FaceTime session with a friend you have not seen in a while can be the human connection you need in these times of quarantine.

Educate yourself

In quarantine, many of us have a lot of time on our hands to fill. You could choose this time to learn the history of the LGBTQI+ community and the work that has been done by the community at large to bring equal rights and social justice. Learn about Stonewall, the riot which is credited as the start of the movement for LGBTQI+ rights and respect. Do some research on figures such as Marsha P. Johnson, Harvey Milk, and Larry Kramer. Knowing more about the history and motivations of the movement may just spur you into further action on its behalf.

Just because we have to be socially distant because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not forced to be alone. Whether you are a part of the LGBTQI+ community or are an ally, we can still come together to celebrate Pride, and take pride in the community all year long. We do not have to let the pandemic keep us from pulling together as one and making progress to move forward.
