Condoms Fact or Fiction

Safe sex is an integral part of sexual health. Condoms and dental dams are an important part of safe sex. They protect not only against pregnancy but also sexually transmitted infections. There are plenty of myths with the facts of barrier methods of protection. Lets go through the myths and facts together.

  • Fact

There are many different kinds of condoms to choose from. There are internal condoms as well as external condoms. External condoms go over the penis and internal condoms go in the vagina. Both avoid contact with semen by being a physical barrier.. They should be used one or the other but not together, which leads us to a myth.

  • Myth

Two condoms are twice as safe? No it is not true. Using two condoms together can cause friction which leads them to tear and become unsafe. Use condoms one at a time.

  • Fact

Dental dams can help stop STI's. Used for oral sex, whether on the vagina or the anus, dental dams can help stop exposure to STIs for both the giver and the reliever. Dental dams are a barrier protection just like condoms and are just as important for sexual health.

  • Myth

Some penises are too big for condoms. This is a myth. Condoms come in all sizes and are made to stretch without breaking. All sizes of penis can fit into a condom and there is no excuse of them being too big or small to wear one. Picking the right size is important however, so pay attention to sizing and get the condom size and type that is right for you and your partner

  • Fact

Proper and consistent condom use promotes safe and pleasurable sex. Using a condom can help you and your partner feel safe, which can help you both relax and enjoy sex without fear of passing on or catching an STI or an unintended pregnancy.

Many complain of lack of feeling with a condom, but with a properly fitted condom this should not be an issue. There are many types and sizes of condom and you need to find what is right for you and your partner. There are also several choices in materials , if there are latex allergies involved, there are many latex free options. Thickness is also something that is widely available in many different styles. Many brands offer variety packs so you can find your perfect fit.

  • Myth

All lube is created equal. Especially when used with condoms, the kind of lubrication matters quite a lot. Water based lubricants are ideal for condoms. Oil based lube can break down condoms and cause them to tear. Never use "household" lube like coconut oil or Vaseline with condoms.

  • Fact

Condoms are easy to use. Place the reservoir of the condom on the tip of the erect penis and roll it down to the base. Leave the reservoir tip open above the head of the penis to catch the semen. It is easy as that, but must be done properly. If you and your partner or partners are using condoms, use them every time.

Condoms and dental dams are an important part of sexual health and safety. Learning to separate myth from fact can help to take the mystery out of using condoms safely and effectively.
