We have frequently discussed here on the blog that sexual health is important to overall health. If you are a vagina owner, the health of your vagina is key to your sexual and overall health. Keep these areas of health in mind to keep your vagina happy and in optimal condition.

  • Hygiene

Keeping your vagina clean is important for health. You want to clean your genital area, but keep soap and cleansers out of there to help maintain the balance of good bacteria that keeps your vagina healthy. You should also avoid douching, as this disrupts the ph balance and bacterial health of your vagina. Always be sure to urinate after sexual activity to clear out bacteria from your urethra and help avoid urinary tract infections. Feminine hygiene products should be used properly and changed often to avoid infection. Keeping your sex toys clean is also a part of vaginal hygiene. Clean yours with mild soap and water or a water based toy cleaner before and after each use. Store the toys in a clean, dry place. There are even some lubricants that have olive leaf extract , which surrounds and removes “ bad bacteria “ from the vaginal canal. You can find this in our online store here!

  • Sex

Sex can effect the health of your vagina. Unprotected sex with a new partner is always a risk and can expose you to various STI's. Beyond that, sex with not enough lubrication can create micro tears in the vagina and cause issues with infection. Rough sex can cause injury to the vagina and labia. Communicate with your partner about how rough is too rough. If you like it a little rougher, participate in good aftercare.

  • Pelvic floor health

Kegel exercises are a great way to keep your vagina and bladder in good working order. Keeping the pelvic floor strong supports the sexual organs and bladder to keep you in good health down there. Kegels are easy to do and should become a part of your health practice for sexual and bladder health. We have an article about Kegels here on the blog.

  • Pregnancy and childbirth

Pregnancy and childbirth are the number one change in life as far as your uterus and vagina. If you give birth vaginally, there will most likely be tears in the vagina during birth. Many women also undergo the procedure of episiotomy or cutting the birth canal which can be traumatic. Vaginal birth can also weaken the muscles that support the vagina, causing sexual dysfunction after you have recovered from birth.

  • Lubrication

Lubrication is great for sex, and even masturbation. What kind of lube you use can affect your vaginal health. Beyond personal allergies, certain lube can harbor bad bacteria in your vagina. Lubrication containing glycerin or petroleum should be avoided for vaginal play. You might also avoid parabens and non-natural oils. Some people are also sensitive to scent, dyes, flavor, or "tingling" properties so test it out before going wild with a partner. There are also many vegan lubricants, which have great plant based ingredients as well as quality lubrication. These could be an option for sensitivity issues as well.

Vaginal health is health. Giving proper attention to the health of your vagina is an investment in your overall health. Take the time to ensure your sexual and vaginal health is kept in check.
