How to choose a lube
Pick by base first, then by feel. Water-based lube works with every toy and condom and washes off easily, but you may need to reapply. Silicone lube lasts far longer and is great for anal sex and showers, but it should not be used on silicone toys. Hybrid blends sit in between. After the base, think about feel: thin and slick (Sliquid Sea, Pjur H2O), thick and cushioning (JO Anal Thick, Wicked Jelle), or a sensation such as warming, cooling or flavor.
Lube bases compared
| Base | Toy compatibility | Feel & staying power | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water-based | all toys, latex condoms | light, natural, reapply as needed | Water-based lube |
| Silicone | glass, steel, ABS; not silicone toys | very slick, lasts longest, waterproof | Silicone lube |
| Hybrid | most toys (patch-test silicone) | creamy, longer than water-based | Hybrid lube |
| Anal formulas | by base | thicker, cushioning | Anal lube |
| Flavored, warming, cooling | mostly water-based | sensation or taste | Flavored, warming & cooling |

Frequently asked questions
What is the best lube?
For most people a glycerin-free water-based lube such as Sliquid Sassy or Pjur H2O is the best all-rounder: it works with every toy and condom and feels natural. Choose silicone when you want it to last longer.
Is silicone lube safe with silicone toys?
No. Silicone lube can soften and degrade silicone toys over time, so use water-based or hybrid lube with silicone toys and keep silicone lube for glass, steel, hard plastic and skin-to-skin sex.
Can you use coconut oil as lube?
Coconut oil is slippery and long-lasting but it breaks down latex condoms and can stain sheets. Wicked's coconut-oil lube is made for the purpose; for condom use stick to water-based or silicone.
How do you use lube?
Apply a coin-sized amount to the body and the toy or condom, add more whenever things feel dry, and keep water-based lube handy to reactivate it with a drop of water or saliva.
Is lotion safe as lube?
No. Body lotion, Vaseline and baby oil are not made for internal use, can irritate, and damage latex condoms. A $15 bottle of water-based lube is the right tool.
