What makes a wax play candle different

Ordinary candles burn far too hot for skin. Wax play candles use soy or paraffin blends with a low melting point so the wax lands warm, not scalding, and peels away cleanly afterwards. The Make Me Melt sets from Icon Brands come as four-packs of drip candles in bold or pastel colours; Master Series' Glow Pour candles are unscented soy-paraffin blends that glow under blacklight. None of these are scented pillar candles from a home store, and that is the point.

  • Make Me Melt drip candles, 4-pack — classic and pastel colour sets, $16.
  • Make Me Melt Passionettes and Pastellines — slimmer drip candles for finer lines, $26.

  • Master Series Glow Pour drip candles — UV-reactive neon wax, unscented, $60.

How to do wax play safely

Test a drip on the back of your own hand first. Hold the candle high, around 36 inches above the skin as the Make Me Melt packaging recommends, so the wax cools in the air; lower it gradually only if your partner wants more heat. Avoid the face, genitals and any broken skin, keep hair tied back, put a towel down, and have water nearby. A little massage oil on the skin beforehand makes the cooled wax easier to peel off.

Build the scene

Wax pairs naturally with a blindfold so each drip is a surprise, with restraints to keep a partner still, and with massage oil for the warm-down. Browse the full bondage and BDSM range, and read how to be a dom for pacing and aftercare.

Frequently asked questions

What is wax play?

Wax play is dripping warm wax from a low-temperature candle onto a partner's skin for sensation. It is a form of temperature play and usually part of a slower, sensual BDSM scene.

Can you use regular candles for wax play?

No. Household and scented candles melt at much higher temperatures and can burn skin. Use candles made for wax play, which are soy or paraffin blends with a low melting point.

How high should I hold a wax play candle?

Start around 36 inches above the skin, as the Make Me Melt instructions advise, and test on your own hand first. Lowering the candle makes the wax land hotter.

How do you get wax off skin?

Let it cool and peel it away; a layer of massage oil applied before play makes this easier. Any residue comes off with warm water and a soft cloth.
