The best lube for sex depends on three questions: are you using condoms, are you using silicone toys, and how long do you need it to last? Answer those and the choice between water-based, silicone, hybrid and flavored lube makes itself. Here is the short version, with real bottles.
Updated October 2026
Quick answer
- Water-based lube is the safe default: works with every condom and every toy, washes off with water, needs reapplying.
- Silicone lube lasts longest and works in the shower; on silicone toys, check the maker's guidance or patch-test first.
- Hybrid lube is water-based with a touch of silicone: longer lasting, still toy-safe.
- Flavored lubes are for oral sex; check they are sugar-free if they will go near a vulva.
- Oils and lotions are not condom-safe. Water, saliva and spit are not lube.
Why lube is for everyone
Lube is not a fix for something being wrong. Natural lubrication varies with arousal, stress, hormones, medication and the day of the week. Adding lube reduces friction, lets you go longer and makes toys feel better. Almost everyone who tries a good lube keeps using it.
Three questions that pick your lube
- Condoms? Then no oils. Water-based, silicone or hybrid only.
- Silicone toys? Then water-based or hybrid, not silicone lube.
- How long? A quick session suits water-based; a long one, or the shower, suits silicone.
If you answered no, no and short, almost any water-based bottle in the store will do and you can choose on feel and price.
The four types of lube
Water-based
The all-rounder. Safe with latex condoms and every toy material, easy to wash off, no stains. The trade-off is that it absorbs and dries, so you reapply. JO H2O, Wicked Simply Aqua and Sliquid Sassy 4.2 oz are the three we hand out most.
Silicone
Slick for a very long time, works underwater, a tiny amount goes a long way. Not for use on silicone toys, and you need soap to wash it off. Überlube is the thin, premium option; pjur Original 10 ml is a pocket-sized way to try silicone for under $10.
Hybrid
Water-based with a small percentage of silicone. You get longer wear and a silkier feel while staying toy- and condom-safe. Wicked Simply Hybrid is our best seller.
Flavored and oral
Water-based lubes with flavor for oral sex. Wicked Aqua Flavored 4 oz is sugar-free and glycerin-light, which matters if it ends up near a vulva.
What about oil?
Coconut oil and massage oils feel lovely for massage and are fine for some solo play, but they weaken latex condoms and are hard to wash out of the body and the sheets. Keep them for massage.
The best lube by situation
Vaginal sex
Water-based for most people; a glycerin-free formula if you are prone to irritation. Silicone if you want it to last a whole session without a top-up.
Anal sex
Thicker and longer-lasting matters more here. Silicone, or a thick water-based anal gel. We cover this in detail in our anal lube guide.
Oral sex
Flavored water-based lube, sugar-free. A little goes a long way and it rinses off.
Sex toys
Water-based or hybrid with silicone toys. Silicone lube is fine on glass, steel and hard plastic; on silicone toys, check the maker's guidance or patch-test first. Our lube types chart covers every pairing, and how to clean sex toys explains which materials are body-safe.
Shower and bath
Silicone only; everything else washes away.
Masturbation
Anything you like. Silicone for a long solo session, water-based with a stroker or a vibrator, and some people enjoy a massage oil for hands-only play.
Dryness and sensitive skin
Dryness is common and has many causes, from medication to stress to hormonal change. A thicker, glycerin-free water-based lube such as Sliquid Sassy is where most people start. If dryness is persistent or painful, a clinician can look at the cause; lube is comfort, not a diagnosis.

How to use lube well
Warm a few drops between your fingers, apply to both people or to the toy, and add more whenever there is drag; a second application is normal, not a failure. With condoms, a drop inside the tip and more outside. With silicone toys, use water-based or hybrid. If a lube stings, tingles unpleasantly or leaves you irritated, stop using it and try a glycerin-free, paraben-free formula; many people with sensitive skin do better with those. This guide is general information from a retailer, not medical advice. Pain, bleeding, numbness or anything that worries you is a reason to stop and talk to a clinician.
