Corset or bustier: which do you need?
A corset shapes the waist. It has boning sewn into channels all the way around, a front closure (a busk, a zipper or hooks) and a lace-up back you tighten to pull the waist in. A bustier shapes the bust. It is a longline bra with underwire cups, lighter boning and usually a hook-and-eye back, and it stops at or above the natural waist. If you searched for a corset bra, you want a bustier. If you want an hourglass, buy a corset. Badd Kitty stocks about 25 corsets and bustiers from $56.95 to $117.95.
| Style | Shapes | Closure | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overbust corset | Waist and bust, covers both | Busk, zipper or hook-and-eye front; lace-up back | $78.95–$117.95 |
| Underbust corset | Waist only, worn with your own bra | Front zipper; lace-up back | $71.95–$104.95 |
| Bustier and bustier sets | Bust and ribcage | Hook-and-eye; some lace up the back | $56.95–$79.95 |
How to size a corset
Measure your natural waist: the narrowest point of your torso, usually an inch or two above the belly button. Then use that brand's chart. Daisy Corset's Lavish corsets run S to 3XL, Shirley of Hollywood uses numbered sizes 32 to 38 (check its chart), and Fantasy Lingerie makes plus versions of its underbust and underwire corsets. If you fall between sizes, go up one: a corset that cannot close at the front has nothing left to tighten. When it fits, the laces leave an even, parallel gap down the back.
How to put on a lace-up corset
- Loosen the back laces all the way.
- Wrap the corset on and close the front: hook the busk studs into their loops from the top down, or zip it.
- Pull the two long loops at the waist out to the sides in small steps, working slack up and down.
- Stop at snug, not breathless, and tie the loops in a bow.
Our corsets are fashion and lingerie corsets built with plastic or acrylic boning, some with steel bones at the back. They are not waist trainers, so wear them for an evening and do not sleep in them.
Red corsets and underbust corsets
For a red corset, Daisy Corset makes two: the Lavish Red Lace Front Zipper Corset ($109.95), satin with a lace net overlay and 4 steel back bones, and the Lavish Red Underbust Corset ($104.95), red satin with black lace, a hidden front zipper and a privacy panel behind the laces. Oh La La Cherie's wine-colored vinyl Rider Bustier ($79.95) is the bustier option. For an underbust corset, the Lavish Red is the structured choice; Fantasy Lingerie's Underbust Corset & G-string ($71.95, also in plus) is the lighter one. Wear an underbust over a bralette, or over a fitted shirt as a corset top.
Brands, care and where to buy
Daisy Corset and Shirley of Hollywood make the structured corsets; Fantasy Lingerie, Dreamgirl, Coquette, Oh La La Cherie, Mapale and Escante make the bustiers and bustier sets. Spot clean or hand wash cold unless the label says otherwise (the Lavish Red Underbust is dry clean only), and store a corset flat or folded at the sides, never folded across the bones. Shop by color in black corsets, or by fabric in lace corsets. Most corsets have removable garters, so add thigh highs or a garter belt. The corset guide covers lacing in depth and the corset size chart shows how to measure; the full range is in women's lingerie. Corset sizing varies more from brand to brand than any other lingerie, so measure first or ask our staff for sizing help. Find a boutique.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a corset and a bustier?
A corset shapes the waist: it has boning all the way around, a front busk or zipper and a lace-up back. A bustier shapes the bust: it is a longline bra with underwire, lighter boning and usually a hook-and-eye back.
What is the difference between an overbust and an underbust corset?
An overbust corset covers the bust and the waist. An underbust corset stops just below the bust, so you wear it with your own bra or over a shirt.
How do I measure for a corset?
Measure your natural waist, the narrowest point of your torso, usually an inch or two above the belly button. Use that brand's size chart and size up if you are between sizes.
What is a busk on a corset?
A busk is the front closure: two stiff strips, one with loops and one with studs, that hook together so you can get in and out without unlacing the back.
Can you wear a corset as a top?
Yes. Satin and lace-over-satin corsets work as a corset top with jeans or a skirt once the garter straps are removed. Sheer fishnet and mesh corsets are lingerie.
Are these corsets for waist training?
No. Our corsets are fashion and lingerie corsets with plastic or acrylic boning, some with steel back bones. Wear them for an evening, not overnight or for waist training.
