Condom Size Chart: How to Measure and Find Your Fit

This condom size chart matches your erect girth to a condom's nominal width, the number that decides fit. Most people fit a standard 52–54 mm condom. Larger girths suit 55–58 mm lines such as Trojan Magnum. Measure once, compare, and check the expiry date.

Key takeaways

  • Girth decides fit, not length. Condoms are sized by nominal width. Almost every condom is long enough.
  • Standard is 52–54 mm. Trojan designs its regular condoms for a 4.25–5 inch girth. Large (Magnum) condoms run 55–58 mm.
  • Average is smaller than the internet suggests. Clinician-measured erect length averages 5.2 inches and girth 4.6 inches.
  • Bad fit causes real problems. In one study, men who said their condoms fit poorly had about 2.6 times the odds of breakage and 2.7 times the odds of slipping.
  • Condoms expire. Shelf life is usually three to five years. Heat, friction and oil-based products wear them out sooner.

How condom sizes work

Two numbers describe a condom. Length is measured tip to base when fully unrolled. Nominal width is measured across the condom lying flat, which is half its unstretched circumference. Trojan explains that its condoms are sized by both, and that they should be tighter at the base so they don't slip off (Trojan size chart). SKYN describes nominal width as the diameter at the open end, and calls 53 mm standard sizing (SKYN Original).

Width matters more because latex and polyisoprene stretch. A 53 mm condom has an unstretched circumference of about 106 mm, or 4.2 inches. On a 4.6-inch girth it stretches a little and grips. That gentle grip is the point. SKYN recommends a condom slightly snugger than your girth so it stays in place (SKYN fitting instructions).

How to measure for a condom

Measure when fully erect. A soft tape measure is easiest. A piece of string and a ruler work too.

  1. Length: rest a ruler on top of the penis, press it gently into the pubic bone, and read the number at the tip.
  2. Girth: wrap the tape or string once around the thickest part of the shaft. Keep it snug, not tight. Mark where it meets and measure the string.
  3. Convert if you need to: multiply inches by 25.4 for millimeters.
  4. Match girth to width: use the chart below. If you sit between two sizes, try one of each.

Measuring twice on different days gives a better number. Erections vary with arousal, temperature and time of day.

Condom size chart

Fit Nominal width Unstretched circumference Usually suits What we stock
Snug Under 52 mm Under 4.1 in Girth below Trojan's regular range, or standard condoms slip None in stock right now. Ask at your boutique.
Standard 52–54 mm About 4.1–4.25 in Girth about 4.25–5 in (Trojan's regular range) Trojan Ultra Thin, Trojan Raw, Trojan Double Ecstasy, SKYN Original, Kimono Micro Thin Large
Large 55–57 mm About 4.3–4.5 in Girth 5 in or more, or standard feels tight Trojan Magnum, Magnum Raw, Magnum Bareskin
Extra large 58 mm and up About 4.6 in and up Standard and large both feel tight Trojan Magnum XL

The girth guidance comes from Trojan, which suggests a large condom if you are longer than 7 inches and at least 5 inches around, or if a standard condom feels too tight or doesn't cover the shaft (Trojan). Treat every chart as a starting point. Fit and feel are personal.

Condom sizes for the brands we stock

Widths and lengths below are the manufacturers' own published specs. "Base / mid-shaft" shows whether a condom flares: the same number twice means straight-walled. Prices are Badd Kitty prices at the time of writing. A few of these sell quickly, so check the product page for stock.

Condom Material Length Width: base / mid-shaft Price
Trojan Ultra Thin (3) Latex 6.7–7.5 in 53 / 53 mm $9.95
Trojan Raw (10) Latex 6.7–7.5 in 53 / 53 mm $37.95
Trojan Double Ecstasy (3) Latex 7.5–8.3 in 53 / 73 mm $10.95
SKYN Original (3) Polyisoprene, non-latex Not listed 53 mm at the open end $9.95
Kimono Micro Thin Large (3) Latex, 0.055 mm 7.5 in (190 mm) 53 mm nominal $10.95
Trojan Magnum (12) Latex 7.1–7.9 in 55 / 62 mm $25.95
Trojan Magnum Raw (3) Latex 7.5–8.3 in 57 / 60 mm $13.95
Trojan Magnum Bareskin (3) Latex 7.5–8.3 in 57 / 60 mm $9.95
Trojan Magnum XL (3) Latex 7.1–7.9 in 58 / 63 mm $7.95

Two things stand out. The Kimono Micro Thin Large is longer than a standard condom but no wider, so it suits a longer, average-girth penis. Trojan Double Ecstasy keeps a standard 53 mm base but balloons to 73 mm around the head, which gives more room and movement up top. Magnum XL also comes in a 12-pack for $20.95.

"Is 6 inches small for condoms?" Real numbers

No. Six inches is above average. A 2015 review in BJU International pooled clinician measurements and found an average erect length of 13.12 cm (about 5.2 inches) and an average erect girth of 11.66 cm (about 4.6 inches) (Veale et al., 2015). A US study of 1,661 men who measured themselves for sized condoms found 14.15 cm long and 12.23 cm around, about 5.6 and 4.8 inches (Herbenick et al., 2014).

A standard Trojan is 6.7–7.5 inches long, so it covers most penises with room to spare. If some condom stays rolled at the base, that is normal and fine. Most people fit a standard condom.

"Can a 7 inch fit a Magnum?" and "Do I need a Magnum?"

Yes, a 7-inch penis can wear a Magnum, and it can usually wear a standard condom too. Length rarely forces the choice. The real question is girth. Magnums are 55–58 mm wide at the base. On an average 4.6-inch girth, a Magnum can feel loose and slip. If you are long but average in girth, try the Kimono Micro Thin Large or a bulbous condom like Double Ecstasy before going up a width. Choose a Magnum when a standard condom pinches, is hard to roll down, or leaves a deep red ring.

Size isn't a status symbol. The best condom is the one that fits and gets used every time.

Signs your condom doesn't fit

Poor fit is common. In one study of 436 men, 44.7% said their condoms fit poorly. Those men were more likely to report breakage, slipping, penile irritation, losing their erection and taking the condom off before sex ended (Crosby et al., 2010).

Too tight Too loose
Hard to roll down, or stops partway Slides down or bunches during sex
Pinching, numbness or a deep red ring at the base Wrinkles or a baggy tip
Losing your erection after putting it on Comes off when you pull out
Breaks during sex Leaks at the base
Try: 55–57 mm (Magnum, Magnum Raw) Try: 53 mm standard, or ask us about snug sizes

Hold the base of the condom when you pull out, whatever size you wear. If a condom breaks or slips off, the NHS advises getting help quickly about emergency contraception and STI testing (NHS).

Do condoms expire?

Yes. Every condom has an expiry date on the box and on each wrapper. Shelf life is typically three to five years. Latex and polyurethane last the longest. Spermicide shortens shelf life, and polyisoprene usually lasts up to three years (Healthline). The NHS warns that an expired condom may not be effective.

How to store and check a condom

  1. Store it cool and dry. Planned Parenthood advises keeping condoms away from sharp objects and direct sunlight. Don't keep them in a pocket, car or bathroom for more than a month (Planned Parenthood).
  2. Check the date before you open it.
  3. Squeeze the wrapper. You should feel a small air bubble. No bubble can mean a damaged seal.
  4. Open with fingers, not teeth or scissors.
  5. Bin it if it looks wrong. Sticky, brittle, dry or discolored means use a fresh one.

Never wear two condoms at once. The NHS says doubling up can make one or both split.

Latex allergy? Your options

Latex is in many products, including condoms, and some people react to it (ACAAI). The alternatives are polyisoprene, polyurethane and lambskin. SKYN Original ($9.95) is polyisoprene, a non-latex synthetic rubber, at a standard 53 mm. Lambskin protects against pregnancy but not STIs (Planned Parenthood). If you have itching, swelling or hives after sex, stop using that product and see a doctor or allergist.

Lube and condoms

Use water-based or silicone lube with latex condoms. Oil, including coconut oil, baby oil and petroleum jelly, damages latex. Polyisoprene is just as sensitive to oil (WHO/UNFPA/FHI360). Extra lube matters most for anal sex: in one study WHO cites, condoms broke 3% of the time with added water-based lube and 21.4% without it. Frequently asked questions

How do I know what size condom to buy?

Measure your erect girth around the thickest part of the shaft. About 4.25 to 5 inches fits a standard 52–54 mm condom; 5 inches or more, or a standard that pinches, suits a 55–58 mm large condom like Trojan Magnum.

Is 6 inches small for condoms?

No. Clinician-measured studies put average erect length at about 5.2 inches, and a standard Trojan condom is 6.7 to 7.5 inches long. Girth, not length, decides whether you need a different size.

Can a 7 inch penis fit a Magnum?

Yes, but length alone doesn't mean you need one. Trojan suggests a large condom if you are over 7 inches long and at least 5 inches around, or if standard condoms feel tight. With average girth, a Magnum may slip.

Do condoms expire?

Yes. Most last three to five years, and spermicide or polyisoprene can shorten that. Check the date on the wrapper, store condoms somewhere cool and dry, and don't use one that is sticky, brittle or past its date.

What happens if a condom is too big or too small?

Too small can pinch, cause erection loss and break. Too big can wrinkle, slip off or leak. In one study, men who said their condoms fit poorly had more than double the odds of reporting breakage and slipping.

Is wearing two condoms safer than one?

No. The NHS advises against using more than one condom because it can make one or both split. One well-fitting condom, used correctly with lube, is the safer choice.
