The best lube for anal sex is thick, long-lasting and reapplied often. Silicone lube lasts longest, water-based anal lube works with every toy and condom, and hybrids sit in between. Here is how to choose, with the bottles our staff actually recommend.

Quick answer
- Silicone lube is the longest-lasting option for anal sex and does not dry out; do not use it on silicone toys.
- Thick water-based anal lube works with every toy and every condom and washes off easily; reapply as it dries.
- Hybrid lube is water-based with a little silicone: longer-lasting than plain water-based, still toy-safe.
- Skip oils with latex condoms and skip numbing lubes altogether.
- The amount matters more than the brand. Use far more than you would vaginally.
Why anal lube is different
The rectum does not produce its own lubrication and the tissue is thinner than vaginal tissue. That means friction is the enemy, and lube is doing all of the work. Anal lubes are thicker so they stay where you put them and cushion more. Any lube is better than none, but a thin lube that disappears in a minute is why many people think anal sex hurts.
How much is enough?
More than you would use anywhere else: a generous coating on whatever is going in, a fingertip's worth just inside, and a top-up every few minutes. If you finish a session with lube left on the sheets, you used the right amount. A 4 oz bottle lasts a couple of weeks of regular use, which is why our staff point beginners to the larger sizes.
Silicone vs water-based vs hybrid
Silicone lube
Slick, very long-lasting, does not absorb into skin, works in water. Perfect for anal sex between bodies or with glass, steel and hard plastic toys. The catch: it can degrade silicone toys and it needs soap to wash off. pjur Backdoor Silicone Anal 3.4 oz is the classic.
Thick water-based anal lube
Gel-thick formulas such as JO Anal Thick and Wicked Jelle Plus cushion like silicone but are safe with every toy and condom, and rinse away with water. They dry faster, so keep the bottle close and reapply.
Hybrid lube
Mostly water with a small amount of silicone: longer lasting than water-based, still safe with silicone toys and condoms. Wicked Simply Hybrid is our best seller in this group and a good one-bottle answer.
Oil-based and numbing lubes
Oils, including coconut oil, break down latex condoms and stain sheets. Numbing or desensitising lubes hide pain, and pain is information. We would rather you go slower with more lube.
Which lube for which situation
With butt plugs and prostate toys
Most plugs and prostate massagers are silicone, so use a thick water-based or hybrid lube. Glass and stainless steel plugs are the exception: silicone lube is fine on them and lasts the longest.
With condoms
Water-based, silicone and hybrid are all condom-safe. Put a drop inside the tip of the condom and plenty on the outside. Never use oil with latex.
In the shower
Water washes water-based lube away in seconds. Silicone lube is the only type that survives running water.
For long sessions
Silicone, or a thick hybrid, and a bottle within arm's reach. The moment there is drag, stop and reapply rather than pushing through.
Ingredients worth knowing
- Glycerin-free formulas, such as Sliquid, suit people who find standard lubes irritating.
- Paraben-free is now standard across the brands we stock.
- Desensitisers (benzocaine, lidocaine) are the ingredients to avoid for the reasons above; relaxing serums with hemp or clove are a gentler category, but none replace warm-up.

How to use it (and when to stop)
Apply lube to the outside, to whatever is going in, and a little just inside with a fingertip. Reapply every few minutes or whenever there is drag. Warm up with a finger or a small plug before anything bigger; the muscle relaxes with time, not force. Use toys with a flared base only, choose body-safe silicone, glass or steel, and wash toys with a toy cleaner before and after. Never go from anal to vaginal without washing or a fresh condom. Stop if there is pain, and see a clinician for any bleeding. This guide is general information from a retailer, not medical advice. Pain, bleeding, numbness or anything that worries you is a reason to stop and talk to a clinician.
