How to Use a Cock Ring: Sizing, Safety and Time Limits

How to use a cock ring: slide it onto a soft or half-hard penis with a little lube, at the base or behind the testicles. Keep it snug, not tight. Remove it within 30 minutes, or at once if you feel numbness, coldness or pain.

Key takeaways

  • What it does: a cock ring slows blood leaving the penis, so erections can feel firmer and last a little longer.
  • Start stretchy. Soft silicone or adjustable rings are easiest to put on and take off. Save rigid metal rings for later, if ever.
  • The 30-minute rule: most manufacturers warn against wearing one longer than 30 minutes. Set a timer.
  • Stop signs: numbness, coldness, a pale or blue color, pain or major swelling mean take it off now.
  • Never sleep in one. Erections happen in sleep, and you can't watch the clock.

What a cock ring does (and doesn't do)

A cock ring, also called a penis ring or constriction ring, sits around the base of the penis, or around the penis and scrotum. Blood flows in as usual during arousal, and the ring slows it flowing back out. The result can be a firmer, slightly fuller erection, more sensation and, for some people, a delayed and more intense orgasm (Healthline). Vibrating versions add a motor that also stimulates a partner.

A ring doesn't treat erectile dysfunction. Constriction bands are used with vacuum erection devices for ED, and ISSM suggests asking a healthcare provider how long to wear one (ISSM). If erections are often a struggle, see a doctor, because ED can have medical causes worth checking.

Check with a doctor first if you

  • take blood thinners, or medication that affects alertness
  • have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or a blood or nerve condition
  • have a penile injury or pain in the groin or genitals

That list comes from Healthline's medically reviewed guide.

The Performance VS1 rings are platinum-cured silicone. The maker says they stretch to twice their original diameter, and you get three rings for under $10. The Boneyard Ultimate ring is a thick 100% silicone donut, 20 mm across the inside before it stretches, with a 3x stretch and a non-roll design. Boneyard says it's safe with all lubricants. The Zolo Fit Rite snaps adjust up to 2 inches in diameter, and it's rechargeable with 10 vibration modes.

The International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) advises avoiding metal rings (ISSM). A metal ring can't be cut off with household scissors. Case reports describe emergency teams needing specialist cutting tools to remove stuck metal rings (Patel et al., 2018).

How to choose your size

Stretchy rings: buy a multi-size set and try the middle one first. The right ring sits flat and snug when you're hard and leaves no deep marks when it comes off.

Rigid or fixed rings: measure first. Wrap a string around the base of the soft penis. To wear the ring behind the testicles, wrap the string behind the scrotum and over the top of the penis. Divide that circumference by 3.14 to get the diameter, which is how fixed rings are sold (Healthline). For example, a 5-inch measurement gives a diameter of about 1.6 inches. The Spartacus set comes in 1.5, 1.75 and 2 inch rings. If in doubt, size up, or choose an adjustable ring.

How to put on a cock ring

Around the shaft only

  1. Start soft or half-hard. A full erection makes it harder to fit.
  2. Put a little water-based lube on the ring and the skin.
  3. Lift the head of the penis and gently roll or slide the ring down to the base.
  4. Settle it flat against the body, with no skin or hair pinched underneath.

Behind the testicles (penis and scrotum)

  1. With the penis soft, put one testicle through the ring, then the other.
  2. Bend the penis down and ease it through the ring.
  3. Settle the ring behind the scrotum and across the top of the penis.

This placement usually feels firmer. Trimming pubic hair makes it more comfortable. With an adjustable ring, position it first and then tighten the snaps until it's snug, not tight.

With a condom

Put the condom on first and roll it down fully. Then add the ring over it, making sure it isn't dragging on the condom (Healthline). Check our condom size chart if condoms already feel tight.

How long can you wear a cock ring?

Thirty minutes is the ceiling. ISSM notes that most manufacturers warn against wearing a constriction ring longer than 30 minutes. While it's on, fresh oxygenated blood can't flow freely into the penis, and in severe cases tissue can be damaged (ISSM). Healthline suggests starting a timer from the moment you're erect. Our staff's advice for your first few times: aim for 20 minutes, and stop sooner if anything feels off.

Take it off immediately if you notice

  • numbness or tingling
  • the penis feels cold
  • pale, blue or purple skin
  • pain or a throbbing ache
  • swelling that keeps building

Can you sleep with a cock ring on?

No. Erections happen naturally during sleep, and asleep you can't feel warning signs or keep to a time limit. Healthline gives nocturnal erections as the reason never to doze off in one. Take it off before you fall asleep, even after a short session.

Taking it off, and what to do if it's stuck

  1. Wait until you are soft, or mostly soft. Removal is easy then.
  2. Add more lube and slide or roll the ring off. Behind-the-balls rings come off in reverse order: penis first, then one testicle at a time.
  3. Stuck soft ring? Slide a tissue or something thin between the ring and your skin, then carefully snip the ring with blunt-tipped scissors (Healthline).
  4. Stuck metal ring, swelling you can't reverse, or severe pain? Go to the emergency department. Don't try to cut metal yourself.

An erection lasting longer than 3 to 4 hours is a medical emergency, ring or no ring (NHS).

Lube and cock rings

Water-based lube works with every ring and makes it easier to put on and take off. Silicone lube is fine on metal. On silicone or soft rings, check the maker's guidance or patch-test first: Boneyard says its rings are safe with all lubricants, while Performance warns against silicone lube on its rings. Skip numbing lubes and sprays. If you can't feel pressure, you can't feel the warning signs (Healthline). Browse water-based lube. Our guide to lube types explains which lube suits which material.

Vibrating cock rings for couples

A vibrating ring turns the wearer's body into a hands-free vibrator. Wear the motor on top during face-to-face sex and it presses against the clitoris or vulva. Turn it underneath and it buzzes against the testicles and perineum for the wearer. Grinding positions, where your hips stay close, get the most from it. Our sex positions guide has ideas.

  • Screaming O 4B OWow ($30.95): a stretchy SEBS ring with a bullet motor, 5 speeds plus 1 pulse pattern, and 30+ minutes of battery life per the maker. A low-cost way to try one.
  • Vedo Thrust ($64.95): a rechargeable silicone dual ring with a vibrating tongue for clitoral stimulation, 3 speeds and 7 patterns, and it's submersible.
  • We-Vibe Pivot 2 ($149.95): a stretchable couples ring that stimulates the penis and clitoris, controlled with the We-Vibe app, so either partner can run it.

Cleaning and care

Wash the ring with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner after every use, rinse well and let it air-dry. Silicone and metal are non-porous and clean fully. Stretchy TPE and similar soft plastics are more porous, so keep them to one person and replace them when they turn sticky, cloudy or torn. See our full guide to cleaning sex toys. Vibrating rings: check whether they're waterproof or only splashproof before rinsing.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you put a cock ring?

Either around the base of the penis shaft, or around the penis and behind the testicles for a firmer feel. Put it on while soft or half-hard, with a little water-based lube, and make sure no skin or hair is pinched.

How long can you wear a cock ring?

No more than 30 minutes at a time, and closer to 20 when you are new. Most manufacturers warn against longer wear because blood flow is restricted. Start a timer as soon as you're erect, and take it off at once if you feel numbness, coldness or pain.

Is it okay to sleep with a cock ring on?

No. Erections happen naturally during sleep, and you can't feel warning signs or keep track of time while asleep. Always take the ring off before you fall asleep.

Do cock rings make you last longer?

They can. By slowing blood leaving the penis, a ring can keep an erection firmer for longer, and some people find orgasm is delayed and more intense. Results vary, and a ring is not a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

What are the side effects of a cock ring?

Worn too tight or too long, a ring can cause numbness, bruising, skin irritation or, rarely, serious injury. Remove it immediately if you notice numbness, coldness, pale or blue skin, pain or growing swelling.

What size cock ring should I get?

Start with a stretchy multi-size silicone set or an adjustable ring. For a fixed ring, measure the soft circumference at the base, or behind the scrotum, and divide by 3.14 to get the diameter. If you are between sizes, go bigger.
