How to choose a vibrator: six questions
- Where do you want it? In a US survey of 1,055 women, only about 18% said intercourse alone was enough to orgasm, and about 37% needed clitoral stimulation during intercourse (Herbenick et al., 2018). So for many people with a vulva, an external toy (a bullet, wand or air-pulse vibe) is the safest first buy. If you already enjoy penetration, choose a G-spot vibe. If you want both at once, choose a rabbit.
- Rumbly or buzzy? Rumbly, low-frequency motors feel deep and spread out. Buzzy, high-frequency motors feel sharp and focused. Screaming O sells the same bullet both ways: the 4T ($19.95) is treble-style "tickle and tease", and the 4B ($21.95) is deep bass. Wands sit at the rumbly end.
- How will you power it? Battery bullets are cheap but need fresh batteries. Rechargeables cost more and charge over USB or a magnetic cable: the Maia Jaguar charges in 90 minutes, and the Svakom Mora Neo runs 2 hours on a 2-hour charge. Plug-in wands such as the Le Wand Diecast never run flat but need an outlet.
- How quiet does it need to be? Few makers publish decibel figures. Le Wand lists its Mini Micro wand at under 60 dB and its full-size Classique at 68 dB or less. Where no figure is published, check reviews before you buy for a shared home.
- Bath, shower or bedroom only? Check the IP rating. IPX4 means it survives splashes. IPX5 and IPX6 resist water jets, so a shower is fine. IPX7 survives temporary immersion (tested at up to 1 metre for 30 minutes), and IPX8 goes further (IEC 60529 IP code). The Maia Jaguar is IPX7, the Le Wand Mini Micro is IPX5, and the Le Wand Classique is IPX6.
- Which extras matter? App control (We-Vibe, Svakom, CalExotics Connect), heating (the Svakom Cici 2 warms its tip to 38°C), a memory function, and a travel lock that stops the toy turning on in your bag.

Materials, lube and care
- Choose non-porous materials: silicone, ABS plastic, glass and metal can be cleaned properly. Many rechargeable vibes are silicone over a hard ABS body.
- Lube: water-based lube is safe with every vibrator. Silicone lube can leave some silicone toys gummy, so check the maker's guidance or patch-test a drop on the base first. See how to use lube.
- Cleaning: after every use, wash with mild soap and warm water or a toy cleaner. Only submerge toys rated IPX7 or higher. Dry fully before storing. Our guide to cleaning sex toys covers every material.
- Storage and travel: store toys separately, in their pouch or case, and use the travel lock if the toy has one.

Frequently asked questions
What type of vibrator should I buy first?
An external one: a rechargeable bullet such as the Maia Jaguar ($49.95) or a mini wand such as the Le Wand Mini Micro ($35.95). Many people with a vulva need clitoral stimulation to orgasm, and external toys let you learn the speeds and patterns you like before buying a rabbit or G-spot vibe.
How much does a good vibrator cost?
Battery bullets start at $19.95. Most rechargeable, waterproof silicone vibrators cost $50 to $100, dual-motor rabbits and app toys $100 to $180, and plug-in wands and thrusting machines $180 and up.
Are vibrators waterproof?
Check the IP rating on the listing. IPX4 survives splashes, IPX5 and IPX6 resist water jets so a shower is fine, and IPX7 survives temporary immersion (tested at up to 1 metre for 30 minutes), so only IPX7 or higher belongs in the bath.
How loud are vibrators?
Few makers publish decibel figures, so use them where they exist: Le Wand lists its Mini Micro wand at under 60 dB and its full-size Classique at 68 dB or less. For other toys, check reviews before you buy for a shared home.
Is a rechargeable or battery vibrator better?
Rechargeable vibrators cost more up front but save on batteries and are often waterproof; for example, the Svakom Mora Neo runs 2 hours on a 2-hour charge. Battery bullets are cheap, light and easy to replace.
What is the safest material for a vibrator?
Non-porous materials that clean properly: body-safe silicone, ABS plastic, glass and metal. Water-based lube is safe with every toy and condom. Silicone lube lasts longer but can leave some silicone toys gummy, so check the toy maker's guidance or patch-test a drop on the base first.
What is the difference between a rabbit and a G-spot vibrator?
A G-spot vibrator is one curved shaft for internal pressure. A rabbit adds an external arm so the clitoris and G-spot are stimulated at the same time.
Where can I buy a vibrator near me?
Badd Kitty has seven boutiques in South Carolina and Michigan offering private, judgment-free consultations; stock varies by store, so call ahead for a specific model. Local pickup appears at checkout when one store holds your whole order, and online orders ship nationwide in a plain brown box.
