Plus size labels decoded

Lingerie brands do not share one size system. These measurements come from the brands' own size notes on pieces we carry, such as the Mae 3-piece set and the Dreamgirl lace-top stay-ups:

What the other labels mean: Queen, QS or OS Plus is the plus version of a one-size piece. OSXL is Coquette's extended one-size. Items with "Plus" in the name, such as many Dreamgirl and Fantasy Lingerie styles, are cut only in a plus size. Other styles come in one extended size run: the Dreamgirl Satin Chemise goes from Small to 3X and the Daisy Corset Lavish lace corset from Small to 3XL. If a product page lists no measurements, email info@baddkittystores.com before you order and ask.

How to measure

• Bust: around the fullest part, wearing an unpadded bra, tape level across your back.
• Waist: around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button.
• Hips: around the fullest part of your hips and seat, feet together.

Between sizes? Size up for underwire and structured pieces such as corsets, bustiers and longline bras, where too tight digs in. Stretch lace and mesh with plenty of elastane can usually take the smaller size.

Look for underwire, adjustable straps and multi-hook closures. Fabrics: why stretch matters

Elastane (also sold as spandex or Lycra) is what lets lingerie move with your body. The higher the share on the label, the more give: Mapale's Amalfi set is 30% elastane, Dreamgirl's thigh highs 15%, its stretch-lace garter belt 10% and Fantasy Lingerie's Mae set 5%. Low-stretch pieces, satin and vinyl in particular, follow the size chart more strictly. Most of these sets are labeled hand wash cold; drying flat keeps the stretch.
