Strap-on harness types compared

Lingerie-style body and chest harnesses, like the Sportsheets S&M Shadow Body Harness, are fashion pieces. They have no dildo mount. We also stock suction-dock harness kits (Body Dock) and hollow strap-ons worn over a penis in small numbers, so check the grid for what is in right now. Dildos sold separately are in realistic dildos, suction cup dildos and the wider dildos and strap-ons range.

O-rings and dildo bases: will my dildo fit?

Most harnesses hold the dildo with an O-ring: the shaft passes through the ring, and a flared base wider than the ring stops it sliding out. Before you buy, check three things:

• Ring size: Most Sportsheets harnesses come with a 1.5" (3.8 cm) rubber O-ring, and the Curvy Noire adds 1.75" and 2" rings for wider dildos. b-Vibe harness sets include three silicone rings, and the Tantus Bend Over kit has 1.48" and 1.53" rings. The ring should be snug around the shaft just above the base. Too loose and the dildo flops; too tight and it won't seat.
• Base type: a flared base works in any O-ring harness. A suction-cup base also works in a suction-dock harness, which grips the cup instead of using a ring. Doc Johnson's Vac-U-Lock harness only takes Vac-U-Lock attachments.
• Comfort add-ons: the Sportsheets Luma harness cushion ($39.95) stretches over dildo bases of 2" to 3.75". The maker says it steadies the dildo and reduces pubic bruising for the wearer.

Plus size strap-on harnesses

Measure your hips at the widest point where the harness will sit, then compare:

Pegging and strap-on safety basics

For anal play with a strap-on (pegging), the advice from sexual health experts is simple. The rectum doesn't make enough lubrication, so use plenty of lube. Avoid numbing lubes, because pain tells you when to stop. Start small and slow, use only toys with a flared base, and let the receiving partner control the pace, for example by being on top (ISSM).

• Start smaller than you think: the Tantus Silk Small (4.25" by 0.8") or the 5" b-Vibe Beginners dildo, then size up. Keep anal lube within reach.
• Water-based lube is safe with every silicone dildo; if you prefer silicone lube, check the maker's guidance or patch-test it on the base first.

• Fabric harnesses: many are machine washable, so check the listing. Tantus recommends a delicates bag, mild detergent and hang-drying, with the bullet removed first.
